My Belated Birthday Dinner at La Mangeoire

When picking a restaurant for my belated birthday dinner, I naturally gravitated toward French food. Duh. My first choice was Balthazar but apparently reservations there have to be made far in advance. So I decided on La Mangeoire – a Provencal-style bistro in Midtown.

The décor there is rustic. The walls are decorated with lovely paintings as well as copper pots and pans.

It feels very cozy and welcoming. The wait staff was friendly and the service was fast (but not the kind of fast that makes you feel like you’re being kicked out.)

The menu is versatile but with a definite accent on seafood. Their entrees can be ordered as a small plate or a regular plate, which is awesome because after a small plate there’s just enough stomach room left for a yummy dessert.

To start we chose several appetizers to share. Here are two of them:

Escargots in a Crunchy Pastry Shell – rich and buttery, flavored with garlic and parsley, of course.

The Thyme and Honey Caramelized Onion Tart – sweet onions topped with anchovies on crispy dough. This was good.

I had a hard time choosing a main dish because they all sounded amazing but finally decided to have the Roasted Pork Tenderloin, the small plate.

It was served sliced, over buttery mashed potatoes and topped with a shiitake and cherry tomato sauce. It was absolutely delicious. The pork was so tender and the sauce was a nice compliment.

And on to the dessert: I had the Hazelnut Profiteroles.

The portion was huge and sadly I could not finish it all. Three profiteroles were served, split in half and filled with hazelnut ice-cream, topped with a warm chocolate sauce and candied hazelnuts. This dessert was perfect. Not too sweet, with a variety of textures and hot and cold all at once. Divine.

This was Michelle’s Molten Dark Chocolate Cake topped with Tahitian vanilla ice-cream. A good portion and also not too sweet.

And the espresso:

We really enjoyed ourselves and after three courses and two bottles of ‘vin,’ we still didn’t want to leave. I would not mind paying La Mangeoire another visit.

You blog may very well be the death of me. I just started a diet and am finally at the end of the worst finals in the world when I stumble across your blog. I honestly felt my stomach rumble sooo loudly just now.

I'm going to bookmark your site and check back when I'm not malnourished.
